The living seek forgiveness. The dead seek revenge.

A first love.
A last breath.
A haunting past.

Armed with a sinful past and an equally sinful body, Jackson Knight absolves his vow of celibacy to pursue Sergeant Monaghan's unsuspecting-older-housekeeper.

Ryn Middleton, on the cusp of turning forty with a snarky daughter, a killer dog, and an abusive ex-husband, finds Jackson's advances humorous and unbelievable. After intense negotiations including Vera Wang, Ed Sheeran, and sex four times a day, Ryn accepts Jackson's marriage proposal on their first date.

What could possibly go wrong?

While struggling to lay claim to the woman of the dreams he never had, Jackson is forced to deal with a grief-stricken Jillian trying to hold on to her past without letting go of her future-the doctor who took her heart and the Sergeant who gave her a new one.

Beyond the hope for light, lies the middle of darkness, the illusion of truth, and a haunting past.

“Love is reckless because true emotions are immune to logic. The most beautiful love stories are often the most tragic.”

Jewel E. Ann has officially become an auto-buy author for me. The first book in her Jack & Jill series, End of Day, completely blew me away and was a rare 5 star read for me. Middle of Knight proves just how addictive this trilogy is.

The book picks up immediately following AJ’s accident and his confession that he’s in love with Jillian. There’s still a part of Jillian that is holding onto her past as “Jessica” and the love she shared with Dr. Luke Jones. However, AJ could be Jillian’s last chance at love. It seems fate is one ironic bitch though, because just as she’s deciding whether or not to love again, a life-altering discovery is made.

Jillian’s reformed manwhore brother, Jackson, has always had a thing for older women. When he sees Ryn, AJ’s divorced 40 year-old cleaning lady, he decides it’s time to put an end to his self-imposed period of celibacy. His pursuit of her, as well as Jillian’s interference, is hilarious. References are made to Jackson’s demons; however, I was disappointed that we aren’t given glimpses into his past. I wanted to know more, and hopefully questions will be answered in the final book.

The writing is impeccable, and I would have given this book a higher rating if it wasn’t for Ryn. I don’t mind flawed heroines, but I dislike it when they’re overly weak. She allows her daughter and psycho ex-husband to treat her like doormat, and she demonstrates insufficient character growth throughout the book. Then there’s Ryn’s relationship with Jackson. I couldn’t understand why she constantly reminds him that she’s 40 and tries to convince him that she’s not sexy. I’m in my 40s. If I had a hot as hell tattooed 30 year-old wanting to sleep with me, I would be thanking God and singing hallelujahs. Frankly, I couldn’t see Ryn’s appeal, so I had a hard time believing Jackson would fall so hard for her.

The book struggles a bit with pacing in the beginning, but finds its footing halfway through. It’s at this point that the story starts to alternate between Jillian and AJ in the present and flashbacks of Jessica’s relationship with Luke in the past. To me, this is the heart of the book, and once I hit the halfway mark I absolutely couldn’t put it down. In typical Jewel E. Ann fashion, she had me vacillating between emotional devastation and uncontrollable laughter.

Heartbreaking, haunting, humorous, and touching—be prepared to have plenty of Kleenex on hand for this one. Jewel E. Ann is an evil creative genius and that’s all I have left to say—until the next book.
