Vicious a complete standalone and a part of the Sinners of Saint series
So many people have told me how wonderful L.J. Shen’s writing is. I finally decided to see for myself, and Vicious seemed like a good place to start. After chapter one, I was completely mesmerized.
Vicious is the leader of The Four HotHoles, four stunning young men of privilege who are as far from gentlemen as you can get. Vicious is arrogant, ridiculously wealthy, and ruthless. He’s the type of alpha male you love to hate, and his cruelty makes it so easy to hate him. Then there’s poor Emelia—vulnerable and gentle, with a huge backbone and an even bigger heart. Predator, meet prey.
This story has a little of everything: family secrets, revenge, survival, loyalty, and love. The plot unfolds piece by piece at a perfectly patient pace. As a reader, I like to be kept on my toes, and I hate it when too much of the story is given away quickly. There seems to be something new to discover in each chapter of this book, and I found myself constantly questioning Vicious’s thoughts and next moves.
Emelia is a selfless and artistic soul. I admired her strength and resilience, even when faced with the most difficult and humiliating challenges. Her devotion to her family is also endearing. There are so many complicated layers to Vicious you’d need an entire excavating team and staff of psychologists to fully unearth and understand him. I enjoy a good challenge.
I’m just going to say it. Vicious and Amelia’s relationship is screwed up. There’s an intoxicating dynamic between the two of them that’s brutal at times, beautiful sometimes, and always fascinating. The tension between them is off the charts.
Now I can officially concur that L.J. Shen is a master storyteller. Vicious is a standalone. The Sinners of Saint series continues, however, by focusing on a different member of The Four Hot Holes. Their friendships seem complex and rather twisted. I’m eager to learn more about each man.

I haven’t read Sparrow, but I’ve heard good things! I just finished the second book in this series, and it’s even better than Vicious.
