Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Lies.
Words destroyed me.
“I’m sorry. She didn’t make it.”
“Daddy, he can’t breathe!”
“There’s nothing more we can do for your son.”
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
More lies.
Those syllables and letters became my executioner. I told myself that, if I didn’t acknowledge the pain and the fear, they would have no power over me. But, as the years passed, the hate and the anger left behind began to control me.
Two words—that was all it took to plunge my life into darkness.
“He’s gone.”
In the end, it was four soft, silky words that gave me hope of another sunrise.
“Hi. I’m Charlotte Mills.”
6 stars!
Hello, Book Hangover, my old nemesis. I have no idea how you improve upon perfection, but The Brightest Sunset is even better than the first book in the Darkest Sunrise duet. That’s really saying something because The Darkest Sunrise was a 6-star read for me. This book? This book deserves all the stars in the universe.
I’m not gonna lie. I’m glad I had a brand new bottle of red wine on hand because I was guzzling that bad boy like nobody’s business. 99% of the book is tension filled, and I loved every single second of it, but only because it comes from an authentic place.
The complexity of all the characters continues to grow in this conclusion as the stakes increase to catastrophic levels. The Brightest Sunset is devastatingly heartbreaking, poignant, flawlessly paced, and exquisitely written. It is a testament to the power of perseverance and forgiveness. I defy you to put it down.
This is, unquestionably, one of the most haunting stories I’ve read this year. I already have a space reserved for this emotional duet on my 2017 Top 5 list.
