I fell for Connor Drake. I didn’t want to; I fought against it, but I fell in love with him anyway. With his words. With his poetry. With him. The gentleness and beauty of his soul that speaks directly to mine. He writes as if he can feel my heart, hear its cadence and compose the exact right lyrics to accompany every beat and flow.

I’m in love with Connor…so why do I feel an inexplicable pull to his best friend, Weston? Grouchy, sullen, brooding Weston Turner, who could cut you down with a look. Fiercely intelligent with a razor sharp wit and acid tongue, he’s the exact opposite of Connor in every way, and yet there’s electricity in the air between us. The thorny barbs Weston wraps around himself can’t keep me away.

But the more time I spend with these men, the more tangled and confused my emotions become. When they both sign up for the Army Reserves during a time of increasing strife in the Middle East, I fear I’ll never unravel my own heart that sometimes feels as if it will tear straight down the middle…for both of them.

**********Bring Down the Stars is an emotional, angst-filled novel of unrequited love by bestselling author, Emma Scott, and is inspired by the classic tale, Cyrano de Bergerac. (Roxanne) It is Book I in the Beautiful Hearts Duet, coming this summer. Book II, Long Live the Beautiful Hearts, to be released a few weeks later. THIS IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL LOVE TRIANGLE #confusedhearts #notamenage

I was hesitant to read Bring Down the Stars because I knew it was a modern day re-telling of Cyrano de Bergerac. Nothing good can come from a relationship built on a foundation of lies. And yet I willingly waded into what I was confident would be turbulent waters, praying that the characters would be worth the risk to my heart. Weston and the beautiful poetry are shining stars in this story and the main reason for nudging the book toward 4-star territory.

Weston hooked me with his elaborate defenses that were justifiably formed as a young child. If I were to choose an adjective to describe him it would be self-sacrificing. Despite Weston’s negative reputation, his heart is huge and he is willing to deny his passion for poetry in favor of a more practical career that will help support his family. Time and again, he smothers his desires in order to make his best friend or other people happy.

The other characters mean well, but I swear I wanted to slap each and every one of them. Autumn spends hours swooning over “Connor’s” texts and letters and then wondering why things are awkward and quiet when they are together. I grew irritated with her constant whining about electricity, romance, and deep conversations. Should she expect those things in a boyfriend? Sure. Do I need to read about it over and over and over? No.

Connor is an innately happy and generous guy; however, he is also a spoiled little rich boy. He has never wanted for anything, so having to work for Autumn’s affection is a foreign concept—one he puts very little effort into achieving. Fortunately for him, Weston is an excellent wingman. Connor isn’t a bad guy at all. He’s just frustratingly clueless and undeserving of Autumn. I did feel the weight of his parents’ expectations pressing down on him, and for that he earned my empathy.

I can’t even count the number of bad decisions made in this book. I understand the reasoning behind the characters’ actions. I just think they are shortsighted. Here’s to a better conclusion to the duet.

About Emma Scott

author Emma Scott

Emma Scott writes romances with flawed characters, characters with artistic hearts: builders, poets, and writers of various makes and models. Emma loves to write book lovers; those who have found refuge, companionship, and escape in books, much as we all do in real life. She digs realism, honesty, authenticity in storytelling. She also loves to write about enduring love, soul-deep love, in as real a setting as possible, but with big smooshy HEAs. Emma believes in diversity, open-mindedness, and inclusion. She adores sweetness mixed with steam, love conquering all, and above all, hope. Love always wins.
