New York Times bestseller Claire Contreras brings you a sexy sports romance…

I'm naturally gifted on the field and between the sheets. With flashy cars and enough media attention to put the Royal Family to shame, I’m the definition of Most Eligible Bachelor.

Every man wants to be me and every woman wants to tame me. Until Camila.

The moment I lay eyes on her, I know I have to have her.

She wants to keep me at arm's length.
I want her naked in my bed.

She thinks our worlds are too different.
All I want her to think about is screaming my name.

She says I’m bad news.

I have three weeks to prove her wrong.

I tried really hard to think of something positive to say about The Player but came up empty. It’s disappointing because I love a good sports romance, and this one is highly rated. Maybe it’s just me.

I particularly disliked the hero. Warren is shallow, snobby, and entitled. From the moment he sees Camila, the soccer star decides he has to have her. In other words, Warren wants to sleep with her—like really, really, really, really badly or he’ll combust. He’s not irrevocably drawn to her intellect, her kind heart, or any aspect of her personality, though. No, he just wants to bang her because she’s physically attractive. Apparently, she’s the only woman who has ever refused to go out with him, or so he keeps saying. It’s so unimaginable that he needs to complain about it over and over again like a little man child. This whole scenario is repeated ad nauseam: he wants her, he tries to badger her into going out with him, she turns him down, and he pouts. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Camila is a rather dull character as well. These are two one-dimensional characters having a lukewarm romance. When he finally wears Camila down, Warren doesn’t even treat her particularly well.

Honestly, the story just plain bored me. Their spat seems inconsequential, and although there is the potential of intriguing family conflict, it winds up being anti-climactic.

I listened to the audiobook, and sometimes narrators can infuse enough life into a so-so story that it becomes entertaining. That wasn’t the case here. I usually love Zachary Webber, but he is surprisingly disappointing with his lackluster performance. Megan Tusing’s narration falls even more flat. At times it sounds like she’s just reading sentences with little motivation.

Sadly, this was a big miss for me.

  1. This is probably my least favorite book by Contreras. I adored her Hearts series. I’ve loved her books that have been written since this one. I’m not quite sure what it was about this, but I get the bored thing. Great, honest review.
