Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Whoever coined that phrase is a bald-faced liar. Words are often the sharpest weapon of all, triggering some of the most powerful emotions a human can experience.
“You’re pregnant.”
“It’s a boy.”
“Your son needs a heart transplant.”Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Lies.
Syllables and letters may not be tangible, but they can still destroy your entire life faster than a bullet from a gun. Two words—that was all it took to extinguish the sun from my sky.“He’s gone.”
For ten years, the darkness consumed me. In the end, it was four deep, gravelly words that gave me hope of another sunrise.
“Hi. I’m Porter Reese.”

My heart is literally pounding in my chest right now. I’m not kidding when I say I just had to take a Xanax. Aly Martinez nailed it with this gripping story that takes you on an inspirational, breathtakingly emotional journey and never lets you go.
Devastation has caused Charlotte to build up seemingly impenetrable walls around herself to prevent interactions with others and avoid feelings. Porter faces crushing fear and desperation every day. He immediately sees through Charlotte’s fake smiles and cold demeanor, and recognizes a kindred spirit. Their pain is palpable, but the relationship they develop tugs at your heartstrings in a wonderfully uplifting way.
I don’t want to say anything more about the plot itself. All you need to know is that the writing is exquisite. I’ve come to expect nothing less of Aly Martinez, but this is probably my favorite book of hers to date. Hell, it’s one of my favorite books of 2017 so far. The story is innovative and the characters are fascinating in their complexity. I suggest reading this book along with a buddy because you’ll want to share every exhilarating, profoundly moving moment.
If you’re one of those masochists who enjoys cliffhangers then this book is right up your alley. As for me, I need to get my impatient, grabby little hands on the conclusion, like right now. I’ve got more Xanax on standby.
