Everyone told me Follow Me Back was a gut-wrenching tearjerker, but it just didn’t move me the way it evidently did others. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it, because I did.
Without a doubt, the strongest aspect of this story is Hope with her fierce devotion and faith. Kale is a dedicated doctor and cocky devout bachelor. Let’s just pause right here to reflect on this character’s name. Kale. For real? Who names their child after a leafy green vegetable? Either a health freak, a sadist, or one of those pretentious celebrities who names their kid Apple, Sir, Saint, Fuschia (all real names, BTW), or some other ridiculous name that will surely get them teased at school. It was super hard for me to get over his name, but Kale melted my heart once he lets his guard down and his huge heart shines through. His reasons for rejecting romantic relationships, though, felt too flimsy to sustain the conflict throughout the book. Hope also makes some confusing choices for such a strong, smart woman.
Even though I didn’t find myself reaching for the Kleenex, the story is touching and should feed the need for those looking for many Hallmark-worthy moments.
