“You may be faking the relationship, but you’re not faking the orgasms.”
Downsized, broke, and dumped, 38-year-old Marley sneaks home to her childhood bedroom in the town she couldn’t wait to escape twenty years ago. Not much has changed in Culpepper. The cool kids are still cool. Now they just own car dealerships and live in McMansions next door. Oh, and the whole town is still talking about that Homecoming she ruined her senior year.Desperate for a new start, Marley accepts a temporary teaching position. Can the girl banned from all future Culpepper High Homecomings keep the losing-est girls soccer team in school history from killing each other and prevent carpal tunnel in a bunch of phone-clutching gym class students?
Maybe with the help of Jake Weston, high school bad boy turned sexy good guy. When the school rumor mill sends Marley to the principal’s office to sign an ethics contract, the tattooed track coach, dog dad, and teacher of the year becomes her new fake boyfriend and alibi—for a price. The Deal: He’ll teach her how to coach if she teaches him how to be in a relationship.
Who knew a fake boyfriend could deliver such real orgasms? But it’s all temporary. The guy. The job. The team. There’s too much history. Rock bottom can’t turn into a foundation for happily ever after. Can it?
Warning: Story also includes a meet-puke, a bouffanted nemesis, a yard swan and donkey basketball, a teenage-orchestrated makeover, and a fake relationship that gets a little too real between the sheets.
I only recently discovered Lucy Score, but I am loving her brand of small town romantic comedies! Rock Bottom Girl features a kooky underdog heroine you can’t help but root for.
Marley finished high school on an embarrassing note and could not wait to leave her small hometown. She vowed never to return, but when her life falls apart twenty years later, and she finds herself unemployed and homeless, she has no choice but to come crawling back home to her parents. Once there, she’s faced with old rivals, former flings, and memories she’d rather forget.
I admired Marley’s resilience. Just when you think she has hit an all-time low, something comes along to further humble her. Yet she always manages to pull herself together with self-deprecating humor, and she keeps on trying. She knows she’s ill equipped to handle the temporary teaching/coaching job she manages to land at her old high school, but she fakes it until she makes it. Marley’s attempts at coaching the girls soccer team are hilarious, as is the renewed friendship with her high school best friend, Vicky.
Luckily, Jake—the unattainable bad boy she used to crush on—is there to give Marly coaching and teaching tips. He’s now a beloved history teacher and track and field coach. They have fun chemistry together, and I enjoyed seeing her regain her self-confidence with his encouragement. I love how invested he is in her success and in their relationship.
Marley’s super supportive parents with their revolving door of Airbnb guests, the showdowns with mean girls, and Marley’s interactions with her principal are all highly entertaining.
About the audiobook:
Natalie Duke’s narration is infused with the perfect combination of exasperation, defeat, and reluctant hope that is so appropriate for Marley’s character. Stephen Dexter also does a nice job of portraying reliable Jake.

I have yet to read one of Score’s books, but I know I need to change that!
