Strong female friendships and a snappy enemies-to-lovers theme take center stage in this highly anticipated romantic comedy from the USA Today bestselling author of The Dating Playbook.
Successful pediatric surgeon London Kelley just needs to find some balance and de-stress. According to her friends Samiah and Taylor, what London really needs is a casual hookup. A night of fun with no strings. But no one—least of all London—expected it to go down at her high school reunion with Drew Sullivan, millionaire, owner of delicious abs, and oh yes, her archnemesis.
Now London is certain the road to hell is paved with good sex. Because she’s found out the real reason Drew’s back in Austin: to decide whether her beloved hospital remains open. Worse, Drew is doing everything he can to show her that he’s a decent guy who actually cares. But London’s not falling for it. Because while sleeping with the enemy is one thing, falling for him is definitely not part of the plan.
I’m late to this series, but I’ve now read two of the three books, and The Hookup Plan is my favorite.
London is a widely-respected pediatric surgeon, and Drew is a millionaire financier. They are two overachievers and former high school rivals who meet again at a class reunion. London’s grudge hasn’t lessened over time and neither has Drew’s attraction to her. When passion and animosity collide, great angry sex is sure to follow! Drew is so patient and understanding waiting for London to come to her senses.
I was initially bothered by London’s petty behavior, but the story explores the deeper cause of her feelings, and it makes her more relatable. I came to love her sassiness. I expected the biggest drama would be Drew’s responsibility for the financial audit of London’s struggling public hospital. Surprisingly, the most conflict comes from family dynamics, which adds a nice layer to the story.
London has some daddy issues, and I liked the way she tries to resolve them throughout the story so that it doesn’t negatively affect the other areas of her life. There are wonderful messages about the importance of self-care.
There is a need for more diverse characters in romance novels, and this book answers that call. Successful African Americans are well-represented here without making it seem like something unusual—exactly how it should be. Misogyny in the workplace is also a very real thing, and I appreciated that it is addressed in the story as well.
The Hookup Plan could use more editing for length, but I still enjoyed the book.
