A recently deceased woman meets “the one” in the afterlife waiting room, scoring a second chance at life (and love!) if she can find him on earth before ten days are up…

If she wasn’t dead already, Delphie would be dying of embarrassment. Not only did she just die by choking on a microwaveable burger, but now she’s standing in her ‘shine like a star’ nightie in front of the hottest man she’s ever seen. And he’s smiling at her.

As they start to chat, everything else becomes background noise. That is until someone comes running out of a door, yelling something about a huge mistake, and sends the dreamy stranger back down to earth. And here Delphie was thinking her luck might be different in the afterlife.

When Delphie is offered a deal in which she can return to earth and reconnect with the mysterious man, she jumps at the opportunity to find her possible soulmate and a fresh start. But in a city of millions, Delphie is going to have to listen to her heart, learn to ask for help, and perhaps even see the magic in the life she’s leaving behind…

I have been bamboozled too many times to count, so color me tickled that The Love of My Afterlife more than lives up to the hype. This book is just so darling I wish I’d read it sooner.

It takes dying for Delphie to meet the love of her life, but when he is sent back to Earth, she makes a deal that allows her to return briefly to see if the strangers can reconnect. It’s a bit more complicated than that, but you get the gist.

Delphie is an extreme introvert living with unresolved trauma, and she must go well outside her comfort zone to complete her mission. Something about Delphie’s isolation really resonated with me. I couldn’t help but cheer her on as she tackles her fears with varying levels of success.

We meet a delightful cast of characters willing to help her find her soulmate, who for all intents and purposes is her ideal man. There’s her grouchy neighbor, the local librarian, the non-verbal elderly man she checks on, and many others. One that stands out the most is her annoying/hilarious guardian angel, of sorts.

The story is charming and unpredictable, effectively combining humor and poignancy. I kind of wish I’d read the story instead of listening to the audiobook. The narrator isn’t bad, but she makes no effort to alter her voice for the different characters. I was frequently confused about who was speaking. 4 stars for the narration. 5 stars for the story!
