Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is Comfort Reads. When I’m having a tough time and need to escape from reality for a bit, my go-to genre to read is romance. Of course, it must have an HEA, but there are also certain qualities that I gravitate towards.
- Romantic comedy. Laughter is good for the soul, after all. The more banter, the better.
- Small towns. Communities filled with sweet and quirky residents are guaranteed to chase the blues away.
- Books set in another country or exotic location. If I can’t physically get away then I at least want to feel like I’m on vacation.
- Hollywood. You can’t get farther from reality than the life of a movie star or celebrity.
- Historical romance. It can be a classic sweeping romance or a more humorous story. Just take me back to a different era entirely!
- Gal pals. Whether they’re BFFs or sisters, give me a group of strong women who stand by each other through thick and thin.
- Rock stars. There’s something fun about getting a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the music industry and feeling like part of a band.
- Single dad romances. It doesn’t matter if they are parents or guardians. My heart melts whenever I read about swoonworthy men who find love while raising young children on their own.
- Favorite authors. There are certain authors I trust to always pick me up. Penny Reid, Elle Kennedy, Sarina Bowen, Meghan Quinn, and Emma Chase come to mind.
- Re-reads. I wish I made more time for re-reads. I’m never let down when I re-read a favorite.
What do you look for in a comfort or escape read?
Your #1 is my #1. I love how happy romantic comedies make me. I also love almost all the others on your list as well.
They never disappoint!
These are ALL comforting to me too!
