Meet Your Next Heroine: An interview with Jessica Day from End of Day

Welcome to my stop on the Meet Your Next Heroine #WhoRunTheWorld Tour! When it comes to phenomenal book heroines, Jessica Day (aka Jillian Knight) from Jewel E. Ann’s End of Day and Jack & Jill series is at the top of my list. Jessica – with some help from the author – sat down for an exclusive interview with Reading Frenzy Book Blog.

Reading Frenzy: First of all, should I call you Jessica or Jillian?

Jessica: Jessica. I relate to her more.

Reading Frenzy: Weve all experienced the recent challenges of social distancing and being quarantined at home. You and your twin brother were dropped in the middle of nowhere for six months without any contact with the outside world. What was that like? How did you pass the time?

Jessica: It was six months of torture for me. Jackson thrived because he’s an introvert. We passed time by sparring, arguing, and sitting at opposite ends of the tiny cabin thinking about our new future and mourning the past.

Reading Frenzy: You were forced to cut ties with your old life and start over with new identities. How did you come up with your new names?

Jessica: It was random … the way we picked new jobs and drew them out of a hat. Jack and Jill seemed perfect for two misfits—twins. We had a story to make up. Fiction became our new reality.

Reading Frenzy: What were your first thoughts when you found out youd be living in a retirement community in Nebraska – at the ripe young age of thirty?

Jessica: Jackson didn’t care. He’s always had more control with his emotions. I hated it at first, but then I realized it was exactly what I needed. The opposite of my old life. No reminders of everything I’d lost. We quickly figured out the older generation was exactly what we needed. The laughs. The looks. The curiosity. I loved that part.

Reading Frenzy: If youd been allowed to choose, where would you have settled down?

Jessica: Across the street from the love of my life so I could watch over him. I know … it wasn’t possible, but you said “if” the choice would have been mine, that’s the one I would have made.

Reading Frenzy: How old were you when you began taking self-defense lessons?

Jessica: I’m not even sure. My dad had my brother and I sparring for “fun” from such an early age. I don’t remember a time in my life that I wasn’t knocking someone on their ass.

Reading Frenzy: Youve been described as troubled. Some would say youre violent. I think youre a total badass. How would you describe yourself?

Jessica: Protective of those I love. A product of my life’s circumstances. Misunderstood. Beneath it all, I’m just a woman in love with a man who sees my vulnerability as my greatest strength, not a weakness.

Reading Frenzy: Youre quite good at pushing peoples buttons. Whose buttons do you most like to push and why?

Jessica: Jackson’s. I like pushing Luke’s buttons too, but I want him to surrender to me. More than that, I want him to make me surrender to him. But not with Jackson. We protect each other by never allowing the other to surrender. He keeps me strong. Grounded.

Reading Frenzy: There are countless types of home party businesses: cookware, jewelry, makeup, food, cleaning products, home decor, and even sex toys. Can you share any secrets to your success as a party consultant?

Jessica: I’m sexy without trying to be sexy. I’m the woman other women hate, yet they want to be me. They envy my effortless confidence. So whatever I’m selling, they want … they want a piece of the illusion I sell them.

Reading Frenzy: Finally, some random rapid fire questions:

  • Staying up late or sleeping in? Both
  • Introvert or extrovert? Extrovert
  • Target or Walmart? Target
  • Favorite film genre? Mysteries
  • Wine, beer, or liquor? Beer. But only Heineken
  • Thongs or boy shorts? Boy shorts
  • Biggest pet peeve? Slow drivers
  • Camouflage or argyle? Argyle
  • Favorite curse word? Dammit
